Artistic director Mina Zikri presents the Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi in collaboration with renowned violinist Ilya Kaler. Vivaldi’s memorable music highlights Kaler’s talents and shows off the musicianship of the orchestra. The choice is a natural: Vivaldi wrote revolutionary harmonies and rhythms, and it is worthwhile to refresh our collective love of this masterpiece. The Four Seasons has evocative “lyrics,” too. Vivaldi wrote four sonnets, which are not well known in English. Oistrakh Symphony commissioned new translations by playwright Donald Gecewicz. These “lyrics” tell the story of each season and will be presented as part of the music. Michael Druzinsky offers a new work, entitled Fantods, to complement the Four Seasons on the same program. Druzinsky captures the mysterious bluesy uneasiness of fantods, a kind of wavelike restlessness. Druzinsky is the symphony’s composer-in-residence and has presented several new works over the past seasons. His position is part of Oistrakh’s commitment to expanding the classical repertory.
